How can we build in a way that is simpler, more resource-efficient, and yet still of high quality? We explored this question during our field trip to the B&O Park site in Bad Aibling. There, we were able to tour various research and timber construction projects and gain fascinating insights into innovative building methods.
Particularly impressive were Research Houses I through V by Prof. Florian Nagler, which explore how buildings can be designed sustainably through simple construction methods, minimal building systems, and a thoughtful use of materials. The projects demonstrate that good architecture does not necessarily have to be complicated and that there is great potential in simplicity.
In addition to the research buildings, the program also included numerous timber construction projects. These included the Holz 8, Holz 4, and Holz 5 buildings, as well as the new Holz 7 building, which we were able to tour from the outside. Other stops included the Wogeno and BoschWohnen housing projects, the Holzparkhaus, and the seminar building.
The various projects highlighted just how diverse sustainable construction can be and the possibilities offered by innovative designs and materials.
In addition to providing architectural and technical insights, the field trip also offered an opportunity for interesting conversations and a shared discussion about the future of construction.
We’re taking many new ideas and food for thought back with us to South Tyrol. In particular, the concepts of simple construction and mindful material selection demonstrate how important it is to continually question existing planning and construction methods and to explore new approaches.
