Together with SYSTENT, VIVIUS investigated how conventional construction compares to sustainable construction. The analysis showed that the biggest differences often lie in the details—such as the origin of wood, the production of concrete, or the carbon footprint of district heating in Brixen. The eco-rating illustrates how important a differentiated approach is for sustainable decisions in the construction industry.

In collaboration with SYSTENT, VIVIUS conducted an analysis as part of an Ecorating project to compare the impacts of conventional and sustainable construction. The results show that the differences often lie in the details—and that is precisely where the greatest challenges arise.

One example is district heating in Brixen. At first glance, it is considered climate-friendly, but about one-third of the heat is still generated using natural gas, which significantly offsets its carbon footprint. Distinctions are also crucial when it comes to material selection: Regional wood from sustainable forestry offers clear environmental benefits, while imported wood performs significantly worse. Although concrete generates high emissions during production, it scores points when produced regionally and used for the long term.

The Ecorating highlights how important it is to take a nuanced view of construction methods and to make decisions based on a thorough analysis.
