VIVIUS on Tour: “Simple Building” Research Centers in Bad Aibling
How can buildings be designed and constructed in a way that is simpler and more sustainable, while also being cost-effective and of high quality? We’ll be exploring this question at our next VIVIUS on tour on October 21, 2026. The excursion will take us to the research buildings in Bad Aibling, which are considered a pioneering practical example of sustainable construction.
Easy to build—tested under real-world conditions
In Bad Aibling, a research complex has been established in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich to explore new approaches to construction. The focus is on the idea of deliberately designing buildings to be simpler: less technology, less complexity, and lower operating costs, but with robust structures, high efficiency, and sustainable construction methods.
What makes this project unique is that the research isn’t just theoretical. The buildings are constructed, inhabited, and scientifically evaluated under real-world conditions. This yields valuable insights into how simple, resource-efficient construction can work in practice.
The research complex began with three buildings. It has since been expanded to include buildings four and five, and a sixth research building is currently under construction.
Here's what participants can expect:
During a guided tour of the research site, we’ll gain insights into the various buildings, their construction methods, and the findings from the research project to date. This will also provide an opportunity for professional exchange and discussion about which approaches can be applied to our construction practices.
